If you’ve been in living on the dark side of the moon for the last 30+ years, ‘R2D2’ will of course be nothing more than a random series of letters and numbers. Those more enlightened (and we’re safely betting you are!) will of course recognize them as a more-than affectionate tribute to the galaxy’s favourite bleep-emitting white & blue wheelie-bin!
‘Sacred Heart’, ‘Amistad’, ‘R2D2’, ‘Angelic’ – over the last half-year, each release has beaten the drum that bit harder and raised anticipation levels that much higher for Mr. M.O.R.P.H.’s new long-player. That event comes a major step closer again today, with the release of the album’s outstanding title track - the heaven-sent 'Not All Superheroes Wear Capes'.
Brave. Benevolent. Determined. The heroes of everyday life surround us, and collectively, their actions together weave the unbreakable fabric of humanity.
In an era when popular music consumption is characterized by singles and track-driven acquisition, Alex M.O.R.P.H. climbs out on a limb by releasing a meticulously crafted original studio album of 18 tracks created during nearly a year of artistic inspiration. The album title pays homage to the everyday heroes – seen and unseen, lauded and not, large and tiny – who surround us. The album is an ode to the people who comprise the cloth of modern-day society and it is upon them that each of us lean in some way or another, at one point or another, throughout our lives. Alex M.O.R.P.H.’s Not All Superheroes Wear Capes (VANDIT) album is out now.
Arnej was last seen around these VANDIT parts, well almost 12 months ago to today in fact. There he was riding studio-shotgun with PvD, squeezing no small amount of tech burn and toughened trance into last year's 'We Are One' anthem. FFWD a year and the Serbian-born/Canadian-based man-mountain returns, and with 'Ambrosia' delivers a new club-ramping high.
The music of Ben Nicky (of ‘Brave Heart’ fame, and two dozen or more floor-whackers besides!), you’re already most likely familiar with. Ditto for Sue McLaren, whose (per DJ Mag) “haunting” and “emotional” tones have touched a good few VANDIT releases over the last couple of years - Las Salinas’ ‘Arcadia’ and, unforgettably, PvD’s ‘The Sun After Heartbreak’ to mention but two.
Individually, with ‘Invader’ and ‘Lucir’, they’re two producers who’ve more than delivered with goods for VANDIT in recent months. Now, studio-side, Berlin meets Birmingham as Chris Bekker and GodsKitchen resident Paul Thomas bring together their own house-hybridizing, trance-translating sonics to create the mighty ‘Zoundz’!
Pop quiz… Name the sound architect for Mercedes-Benz, NHOW Hotels and VisitBerlin? A stretch, we know. Let’s try resident DJ for Berlin’s notorious den of electronic dance inequity, the Kitkat Club? Nada!? Ok, regular soundtracker of fashion designer Guido Maria Kretschmer’s runway shows and remixer of artists as diverse as Giorgio Moroder and Paul van Dyk perhaps? Owner of the respected klang ID sound agency and lecturer in Neuro Marketing & Sound at two of Berlin’s top universities? Alright, (titan-sized hint then!), the man who has, over the last 18 months, been behind a procession of genre-straddling, VANDIT-originating club & chart hits!?
Over the last five months Chris Bekker has been on a mission to musically capture the heterogeneous essence of his hometown. Each diverse single has brought him a stage closer to July 2016 and the release of his debut album. Today sees this singles ‘tour’ arrive at the very heart of the German capital, with the album’s namesake single, ‘Berlinition’.
You want coolly enigmatic trance-progressive with a just as coolly enigmatic sideline in track title-intrigue? Well look no further, VANDIT are delivering it direct to your music collection / listening-list!
Last year the significantly darker cut of August’s ‘Cthulhu’ & October’s ‘Kurai’ resounded through trance’s netherworld with their array of hook-you-in, mood-ish sounds.
Hot off the back of ‘Kunai’ - their Rodrigo Deem-team-up, April sees those Las Salinas chaps return to the release frontlines. Their latest VANDIT offering steps over to the vocal side of the trance fence and additionally finds Shaulli Harari & Israel Bircher drafting in the talents of LA-born-&-based singer/song-writer Shannon Hurley.
This month sees VANDIT join the long-as-it-is-impressive roll call of labels that English producer Paul Thomas’ productions have graced. Included among them are (deep breath suggested!) SIZE, Positiva, Data, Toolroom, Doorn Records, Sander Kleinenberg’s Little Mountain Recordings, Ultra, Baroque, Whoop! Gareth Emery’s Garuda, Hotfingers, Spinnin’ Records and numerous others!
Alongside production neophytes Shadow Of Two, for the Berliners, Paul has cultivated a melodic/hamonic trancer that’s equal parts style, grace, sophistication and all-out floor-roar! This is "Lucir"!
GodsKitchen Worldwide resident Paul Thomas has never been hotter, putting sales charts and airwaves on notice with his Shadow Of Two’s side project’s ‘Lucir’ and recent Chris Bekker team-up ‘Zoundz’. ‘Tick Tock’ is his first standalone under his own name for Berlin’s sonic knights and with it Paul’s dropped an unequivocally explosive mainliner into the VANDIT late 2014 canon.
Christmas… It seems an age away, right? Well as every clued-up clubber knows, Old Father Time tends to run a whole lot faster this time of year! Before you can steal your first bit of Stollen, scribble a ‘Dear Santa’ or dive into a vat of glühwein, it’ll be upon us, like that big, all-consuming festive tornado that it is!
